Nico Stehr

Nico Stehr, PhD, FSRC, is professor emeritus (Karl Mannheim Professor for Cultural Studies) at Zeppelin University (from 2004–2018) and professor of sociology emeritus, University of Alberta, Canada (Assistant to Professor (from 1970-1997). He studied Economics, Sociology, Law, Social Policy Fiscal Theory and Policy at the Universities of Cologne, Germany and Oregon, Eugene, OR, USA. After his PhD at the University of Oregon in 1970, he was Professor of Sociology at the Department of Sociology, University of Alberta, Canada (from 1979-1997), Eric-Voegelin-Professor at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany (from 1984-1985), Paul F. Lazarsfeld Professor, Human- und Sozialwissenschaftliche Fakultät, Universität Vienna, Austria (from 2002-2003), Alcatel Professor, TH Darmstadt, Germany (2001), between 1977-2023 he held Visiting Professorships at the Universities of Vienna, Free University Berlin, Zürich, Konstanz, Augsburg and Duisburg. His most recent books in English include: Information, Power, and Democracy (Cambridge University Press, 2016), Understanding Inequality. Social Costs and Benefits (with Amanda Machin, Springer, 2016); Knowledge. Is Knowledge Power? (with Marion Adolf, Routledge. 2017); Society & Climate (with Amanda Machin, World Scientific, 2019); Money. A Social Theory of Modernity (with Dustin Voss, Routledge, 2020); Knowledge Capitalism (Routledge, 2022); Understanding Society and Knowledge (Edward Elgar, 2023) and Science in Society (with Hans von Storch, World Scientific, 2023). His books have been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Arabic, French, Italian and many other languages. During the Winter Semester 2022 he was Visiting Professor at the Universität Zürich and during the Spring term visiting professor at the Freie Universität, Berlin. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the European Academy of Arts and Science.
