Paul has no background in the classical sense of the meaning of this phrase for he has lived his whole life in the spaces between spaces and, as a result, belongs nowhere. People have therefore come to know him in many different ways. Some know him for his professional work in the fields of science, technology and engineering (particularly control, systems and cybernetics), but others know him from his work in the social sciences in the context of research into design processes, organisational design, and the social shaping and design of technology, while others have encountered him in the context of design and artistic/literary practices. This reflects his rejection of the notion of disciplines, which has provided the means for him to transcend the conventions, artificial boundaries, and increasingly meaningless separations among disciplines, to become a trans-disciplinary professional. He explores the world from the perspective of a unity of all knowledge. He has developed an extensive knowledge base that encompasses science, technology, engineering, mathematics, the social sciences, business, management, philosophy, history, macro economics, theology, and art and literature along with their associated theories. Being so positioned he finds it natural to investigate the periphery of disciplines as well as unconventional areas, and is doing so through the development of a field of practice called scriptovisualism, which is a dual creative process that involves writing and painting in a highly interconnected way. Scriptovisualism encompasses science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the social sciences, as well as design and artistic practices (literary and visual – hence the term scriptovisualism). Beyond the Renaissance Man, beyond the Enlightenment Man, towards the Post-Enlightenment person.
