David Yurkovich

David Yurkovich is a fiction writer, graphic designer, publisher, and co-founder of Current Words Publishing, a Los Angeles-based hybrid press dedicated to bringing distinctive voices to readers across fiction, memoir, and beyond. His first two novels, Glass Onion and Banana Seat Summer, draw on David's fascination with character, place, and the moments — comic, tender, and strange — that define a life.

David came to prose fiction by way of comics and graphic novels, where he built a reputation for offbeat, character-driven storytelling. His works Death by Chocolate: Redux and Less Than Heroes were published by Top Shelf Productions, collecting earlier self-published work including the original Death by Chocolate comic book, which received grant funding from the Xeric Foundation (one of the most competitive grants in independent comics during the 1990s).

In 2007 he wrote and published Mantlo: A Life in Comics, a benefit publication supporting Bill Mantlo, co-creator of dozens of Marvel properties including Rocket Raccoon, Cloak & Dagger, White Tiger, and Jack of Hearts. The benefit book garnered wide attention across the comics industry and included commentary and interviews from many of Mantlo's colleagues at Marvel and DC.

In 2017, Yurkovich was awarded a fellowship in literature from the Delaware Division of the Arts. That same year, David and his partner, Dianne Pearce, founded what would become Current Words Publishing — born from a shared belief that compelling stories deserve a press that treats them with care. Together they bring more than forty combined years of experience in writing, editing, design, and publishing to every title on their list.

David continues to develop new projects. Upcoming works include New Santa, a dark comedy; White Van Theory, an illustrated horror novella; and The Current Words Guide to Agent Query Letters, a practical tutorial for writers navigating the road to publication.

David lives in Los Angeles, and while he still recalls the carefree days of afternoon bike rides on long banana seats, he remains focused on helping future authors fulfill their publishing aspirations.
