A. W. Bates

Alan Bates is a Coroner's pathologist working in Essex and London, a Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics, and honorary Professor at Brunel University of London. In 2002 he was awarded an MD for his research in medical history. A historian of popular culture, he has written on topics ranging from Elizabethan ballads to Victorian anatomy shows, with a particular interest in how medical and scientific knowledge circulates beyond elite institutions.
