From my base as manager of the Toronto Food Policy Council, I first became actively involved in global food issues in 2002, when I was a delegate to the World Food Summit in Rome.

That changed my life and put a world perspective on food issues at the centre of my concerns, even when the issues I worked on were strictly local.

Since retiring from the Food Policy Council, I've been active in a variety of non-profits that deal with global projects and issues, including FoodShare and Unitarian Service Committee-Seeds of Survival.

As a result of my activities, I've had a chance to speak in and tour many countries, which accounts for the fact that my books combine two elements: I am a public health practitioner who works professionally at the city level, and at the same time I have a grassroots perspective with many heartwarming experiences and stories under my belt.

Both elements inform my books on food, especially The No-Nonsense Guide to World Food and my latest, Food for City Building.
