Joseph Napora

As a private-practice psychotherapist in Baltimore, Maryland, for more than 38 years, Joseph Napora, Ph.D., LCSW-C, has been affiliated with the Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Diabetes Center since 1984, as well as the Suburban Hospital Diabetes Center in Bethesda, Maryland, since 1999. Described as having the “ability to get into anyone’s shoes,” he was inspired to write this book by enthusiastic and optimistic responses of participants at the Centers and in his private practice. Dr. Napora sees Stress-Free Diabetes as a means of helping those with the disease, as well as family and friends who provide support to them.

Dr. Napora earned a Masters Degree at Loyola College, Baltimore, and a Doctorate at University of Maryland School of Social Work. His doctoral thesis is a study of the benefits of humor for senior adults. He has lectured and given workshops nationwide on stress management and using humor to cope with chronic illness. In addition, he has written articles on diabetes care and contributed to editions of Psyching Out Diabetes and A Core Curriculum for Diabetes Education.

A life-long Baltimorean, Dr. Napora injects humor into his everyday life, relishes sunsets with his wife from their high-rise condominium, and most of all, appreciates the proximity to his children and grandchildren
