I'm a Californian from the San Francisco area, but I've lived in the Scottish Highlands most of my life. The only thing I've ever felt ambitious about, is writing. Most of my work focuses on family dynamics, and in particular romantic relationships. My first novel was published in 2000, and since then I've written five more novels, a memoir and a collection of short stories. I won the V.S.Pritchett Prize in 2008, and my short stories have been regulariy broadcast by BBC. I Love You Goodbye was translated into six languages, short-listed for Scottish Novel of the Year, and dramatized for BBC radio. Wait for Me Jack was published in 2017 under Addison Jones. A Sunday Times top summer read, it’s also an audiobook. My memoir titled Wah! was shortlisted for the Highland Book Prize along with Ali Smith and Douglas Stewart. I've supervised on the Edinburgh University Creative Writing program, mentored and tutored for Moniack Mhor Writers Centre, and hold an RLF Fellowship.
