John C. Hurd

John C. Hurd, a graduate of Harvard College (1949) and the Episcopal Theological School, Cambridge, MA (1952), did his doctoral work at Yale University. While in New Haven (1952-57), he served as priest-in-charge of Christ Church, Bethany, whose church building was designed by David Hoadley and erected in 1810. It was here that he developed an interest in early New England meeting houses and churches.

In 1967 after teaching religion at Princeton University and New Testament at the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas, he became professor of New Testament Studies in the Faculty of Divinity at Trinity College, Toronto. He served as editor-in-chief of the Anglican Theological Review (1966-69), and was president of the Canadian Society of Biblical Studies (1972-73). An educational innovator, he received a number of awards for the development of the GREEK TUTOR, a computerized instructional package for the teaching of Greek. He ended his tenure at Trinity in 1992-93 as Dean (pro tem). At his retirement he was presented with a Festschrift [Origins and Method: Towards a New Understanding of Judaism and Christianity; Essays in Honour of John C. Hurd, ed. Bradley H. McLean (JSNT Sup. 86; Sheffield: Sheffield Academic Press, 1993), Pp. 401.] In 2002 Trinity awarded him an honorary doctorate.

He and his wife Helen continue to live in Toronto, and, as they have for more than sixty years, they come to the family camp on Squam Lake, NH, for summers.
