Dr. Stephen Durant is co-author of "Whose Game Is It, Anyway? A guide to helping your child get the most from sports, organized by age and stage", and he is the co-founder and co-director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Sports Psychology Program. A faculty member of the Harvard Medical School Department of Psychiatry, he is a clinical psychologist with a broad range of interests including treatment of adolescent and college age athletes. He currently is a member of the MGH medical team that serves the Boston Red Sox & the Boston Bruins.
Dr. Durant is presently a licensed clinical psychologist, holding the title of Assistant Psychologist in the Child Psychiatry Outpatient Unit of the MGH. Since 1988, he has been engaged in clinical work involving individual psychotherapy with children, adolescents and adults, family and couples therapy, as well as psychological and neuropsychological assessment. His clinical and research interests include paternal nurturance in the father-son relationship, gender differences in parent-child relationships, and sports and character development in children, adolescents and adults.
Dr. Durant is a graduate of St. Mark's Grammar School of Dorchester, Boston College High School, the College of the Holy Cross, and Harvard University. He has been honored as both a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame and as a winner of the St. Ignatius Award from Boston College High. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the Dorchester Boys & Girls Club in the city of Boston. An active rugby player for over 35 years, he was awarded the Player of the Year in 2006 for the Boston Irish Wolfhounds Rugby Football club and was a player alongside his eldest son, Brian, on their Division 3 USA National Championship team in 2007. He resides in Savin Hill, in the Dorchester section of Boston with his wife Laura, and their four children.
