Martyn Murray is an author and scientist with a love of nature. For many years he lived in the wilds of Africa, first in the Zambezi Valley where he studied impala, then in the plains and woodlands of Serengeti – there he studied wildebeest migration as Nuffield Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge. Martyn’s concern is with the relationship between humans and wild nature which he sees as intensely complicated, controversial and yet vital to our common future. He has distilled his thoughts into a debut adventure-travel book, The Storm Leopard, which is a journey across Africa and into the heart of the environmental crisis. 'A Wild Call' continues the journey by boat – a 1939 Fred Shepherd ketch – with a quest this time for personal freedom itself. Martyn turns the spotlight on humans. What makes us free spirits? Is it related to wild nature and are we too under threat?
He recently moved to the Isle of Lismore on the west coast of Scotland where he has established the Lismore Nature Centre. He has a grown up daughter in New York and son in Quebec. Visit Martyn's website: www.martynmurray.com.
