Helen Jacey

Helen Jacey is an internationally renowned author, screenwriter and story consultant. She is the founder of Shedunnit Productions and the creator of the 1940s female sleuth crime book series, Elvira Slate Investigations.

Helen grew up in South London and attended the University of Manchester. In her first career, Helen managed aid programmes to reform the orphanage system in Eastern Europe. This work inspired her first screenplay, leading her to gain an MA in Screenwriting, followed by a PhD from the University of the Arts London.

Helen realised there were no books to help screenwriters develop positive female characters, and so she wrote one herself. Her hugely popular book The Woman in the Story: Writing Memorable Female Characters was first published in 2010 (Michael Wiese Productions). Helen has run masterclasses and training all over the world and is often interviewed and gives keynotes on the subject of representation, gender and screenwriting.

A lover of vintage and 1940s noir, Helen decided to create the first 1940s female detective series Elvira Slate Investigations series.
