About Dick Leatherman, Ph.D., SPHR

Dick Leatherman served as a Manager of Education and Training for the 3M Company, and then spent twenty-five years as the CEO of International Training Consultants, Inc. (ITC). He successfully grew ITC from a one-person organization to a major producer of training packages, videos, and assessment instrumentation, and served as the Chairman of the Board.

On his retirement from ITC, he taught full time at the University of Richmond, where he was an Associate Professor and the Academic Program Director of Human Resource Management for the School of Continuing Studies. During his tenure at the University of Richmond, he was co-director of Public Safety University, a non-profit organization established to provide educational opportunities for public safety officers.

After completing his career at the University, Dick now conducts training workshops on a variety of leadership topics for public service agencies and is a voracious writer of professional books. He now is an adjunct professor at the University of Richmond where he teaches Human Resource Management and leadership.

Dick is widely recognized for his pioneering work in the areas of leadership, trainer training, employee development, and needs assessment instrumentation. His published instrument, the Leatherman Leadership Questionnaire (LLQ) is the premiere test for measuring leadership knowledge. He is the author of several professional books, including the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions of The Training Trilogy and Quality Leadership Skills, and is the author of the highly acclaimed book for employees, Is Coffee Break the Best Part of Your Day?

He has been a presenter at major conventions such as the American Physiological Association, American Society of Training and Development Chapters across the country, and The American Association of Higher Education.

Dick was a 2000 winner of his University’s Distinguished Teacher Award. He consistently received outstanding student evaluations in the “Leadership Skills,” “Introduction to Leadership,” “Training Design and Facilitation Skills,” and Human Resource Management courses he taught to the adults in the School of Continuing Studies.

He attended the University of Minnesota and earned his M.A. in Adult Education and Ph.D. in Urban Services, Human Resource Development from Virginia Commonwealth University.
