Chris Balch

Chris Balch was born in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in Redding, Connecticut, at a time when the backyard was bordered not by other homes, but by unexplored woodland.

For forty years he taught science and directed wilderness education programs in northeastern public and private high schools. Still a naturalist, Chris discovered an enduring love of wilderness that led to decades of experiences in the outdoors. Chris is also a sailor and boat builder.

Chris' first book, WITCH, is the autobiographical story of two young children discovering a woman living in a shack on their property in 1950's rural Connecticut. As the children are befriended by the woman, they come to believe she is a witch.

Chris' second book, The PASS, also autobiographical, tells the story of two young men who embark on a 40-day survival expedition in Wyoming's Rocky Mountains and experience remarkable and unexpected events.

Chris will be releasing a new book, One SUMMER, in December of 2015, and another, Idle MUSINGS, in December 2015

He currently lives in southern New Hampshire, and still enjoys long hiking trips with his dogs.
