Michele and Michael grew up in several different places (three countries in Michele’s case) before meeting at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Both studied Materials Science and Engineering (MSE, or “Course 3” in MIT parlance) and were varsity athletes. Michele fenced foil and Michael was captain of the hockey team. Michael graduated with a Bachelors degree. Michele achieved two Masters degrees from the Leaders for Manufacturing program in addition to her Bachelors degree.
Moving to New Mexico, the couple briefly pursued technical careers at separate companies. Michele supported medical manufacturing at Ethicon, a Johnson & Johnson Company, and Michael joined the Intel semiconductor manufacturing juggernaut. Michele was quickly recruited by Intel to help support their booming growth. Early in their careers, Michael concentrated on reactive and non-reactive plasma sputtering, while Michele led engineering, and manufacturing teams. Both had papers selected for global conferences, received awards for making improvements and were selected for leadership programs. Michele’s later career at Intel included leading software engineering groups and membership in the Organizational Development team. Michael moved to the Materials Laboratory where he played several roles, eventually becoming the Operations Manager.
Along the way, the couple married and had two children who became the central focus of their lives. They volunteered at their children’s schools and invested in businesses and real estate, which eventually led them to leave Intel and to devote more of their time to these pursuits.
