Robert B. Stewart

Rob Stewart is a Certified Value Specialist and Project Management Professional who has been practicing Value Methodology for over 20 years. During this time, he has led over 300 value studies for clients in both the private and public sectors on a wide range of products, services, and facilities from forklifts to multi-billion dollar transportation projects. He has taught courses and lectured on Value Methodology at Portland State University, the University of California, Berkeley, and Chung-Ang University, Seoul Korea. Mr. Stewart was responsible for developing Value Metrics, a value measurement system that compliments traditional Value Methodology. This system of techniques is now used by a number of public agencies as a means to evaluate the relationship of project cost and performance to value improvement.

In 2001, he was awarded the Federal Highway Administration’s award for “Most Outstanding Value Engineering Study” for his efforts on the I-215 Improvement Project in San Bernardino, California. Most recently, he was awarded an “Honorable Mention” by AASHTO for a VE / Constructibility Review Study he led for the Seismic Retrofit of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in 2002. In 2009, he was awarded an “Honorable Mention” by AASHTO for the over $75 million category for his work on the New State Route 138 in Palmdale, CA.

In 2005, Mr. Stewart published the text, “Fundamentals of Value Methodology.” In 2006, this text was translated into Korean and is in the process of being translated into Chinese. This text supports a Module 1 VM Training Workshop that is accredited by both SAVE International and the Project Management Institute. Mr. Stewart has also pioneered an accompanying e-learning version of this course.

In 2008, Mr. Stewart was nominated to serve on the Board of Directors for the Miles Value Foundation, a prestigious non-profit organization dedicated to expanding the discipline of Value Methodology in higher education. In 2009, he was inducted into the SAVE International College of Fellows, which is the highest form of professional recognition in the field of Value Methodology.

In 2010, his second book, “Value Optimization for Project and Performance Management,” was published by John Wiley & Sons. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the practice of value engineering and details the methodology behind Value Metrics.

His third book, “Risk Management for Design and Construction,” will be published in June 2011 by R.S. Means. This book was co-authored with Dr. Ovidiu Cretu and Terry Berends and provides guidance on risk management and quantitative modeling for projects.
