Chester Dawson

Chester C. Dawson III is an award-winning Senior Reporter at The Wall Street Journal.

Currently based in the Motor City of Detroit, Michigan, he covers the automotive industry with a focus on Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and global components suppliers.

Previously, Mr. Dawson was based in Calgary, Alberta where he chronicled Canada's prairie provinces as well as energy-related topics in the northern Plains states. He also worked in The WSJ's Tokyo bureau and reported on the 2011 tsunami and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear crisis.

Prior to the Journal, Mr. Dawson did a stint on Wall Street inside the world of high finance after working as International Finance Editor at BusinessWeek magazine in New York. Earlier in his career spent Japan's so-called "lost decade" in Tokyo with BusinessWeek, Dow Jones & Co.'s Far Eastern Economic Review, The Associated Press and Bloomberg News.

His first book, "Lexus: The Relentless Pursuit," was published in 2004 by Wiley and was reissued in a revised paperback edition in 2010. Mr. Dawson also authored "Frommer’s Japanese Phrase Book & Culture Guide," which was published by Wiley in 2008.

Mr. Dawson is a double nominee and winner of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) Best in Business award.

He graduated with a M.A. degree in Asian studies from Harvard University in 1993 after earning his B.A. in history (with an economics minor) at Ohio University and studying abroad at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan.

Mr. Dawson's next writing project is under development.
