Dr Joss Hands is Reader in Critical Theory at Newcastle University. He specialises in politics and new media. His first book '@ is For Activism' explored the impact of the Internet and digital media on global politics. It was prescient, coming out just before the 'Arab Spring' and the global unrest of 2011 and 2012. It has been influential in the field and is widely cited. Joss has recently been fascinated by the impact of digital technology, and mobile digital gadgets in particular, on collective consciousness and action. His latest book, 'Gadget Consciousness', explores this topic in depth through a philosophical lens - asking how the way we think and act has shifted in the age of the smart phone and social media.
