David Garnes is the author of WAITIN' FOR THE TRAIN TO COME IN; A NOVEL OF WORLD WAR II, as well as AFTER THE WAR WAS OVER: POEMS OF AN AMERICAN CHILDHOOD and FROM MY LIFE: TRAVELS AND ADVENTURES.
His forthcoming books are BACK TO MANHATTAN: A LIFE IN NEW YORK, a collection of memoir essays; and SAL'S WAR, a spin-off to his WWII novel, WAITING' FOR THE TRAIN TO COME IN.
David's poetry, fiction,essays and reviews have also been published in many anthologies and magazines, including AMERICA IN WWII, THE ISHERWOOD CENTURY, TELLING TALES OUT OF SCHOOL, LATIN LOVERS, STORIES FROM THE OTHER SIDE, THE EMILY DICKINSON INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY NEWSLETTER, AND CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE VOLUNTEER'S SOUL. His scholarly essays have appeared in a number of academic reference sources. David is the recipient of three writing awards from the Connecticut Authors and Publishers Association.
Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, David grew up in the 1940s and 1950s. A graduate of Brown University and Columbia University, he was an English teacher at the secondary school and college levels and later a longtime librarian at Columbia University and the University of Connecticut, Storrs. He retired from UConn in 2002. David has also taught undergraduate and graduate classes in composition, literature, and library science.
In addition to writing, David currently teaches as an adjunct faculty at Manchester Community College; leads book discussion workshops for Connecticut Humanities (an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities); and is a longtime and active member of his local Unitarian-Universalist church. He also volunteers at several arts venues in the greater Hartford area, including the Little Theatre of Manchester, where he is on the board and serves as Dramaturge.
