Andreas Altmann

Andreas Altmann was an actor at the Residenztheater in Munich and the Schauspielhaus in Vienna; he studied law and psychology and also completed a degree at New York University. He has worked as a gardener, taxi driver, private chauffeur, male model, car park attendant, dishwasher, waiter, roadworks labourer, night porter, assembly line worker and investment adviser. He spent time in an Indian ashram and at a Zen monastery in Kyoto. He has lived in Munich, Salzburg, Vienna, Paris, New York and Mexico City. Today he is once again living in Paris as a reporter and travel writer. He initially worked for German-language and international magazines and newspapers. Since 1996, he has published books – 27 to date – including seven bestsellers. Only the German editions are listed here. There are translations into Polish, Korean, Danish, Bulgarian, French and Spanish (see my website). Andreas Altmann has been awarded the Egon Erwin Kisch Prize (and nominated a further three times for the EEK Prize), the Seume Literature Prize, the Travel Book Prize and the World Explorer Prize. He has also received an award from the German AIDS Foundation and was nominated for the Klagenfurt Journalism Prize. In 2025, he was awarded the Christopher Bulle Scholarship.
