Michael Smith

Michael L. Smith (1949- ) draws on his broad, multicultural experience to inspire his writing. He currently lives in Rockville, MD, outside Washington, DC. He offers editorial and web services that deliver compelling messages and narratives in print and electronic media. His decades of experience in international affairs gives him a unique perspective and sensitivity, working in English and Spanish.

He worked at the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington for the 15 years. He used his writing skills and technological knowledge to promote awareness about key issues in the developing world.

For 16 years, he worked as a freelance journalist in Peru, covering the country for the Washington Post, Newsweek, the Times of London (UK), the Globe and Mail (Canada), among others. In addition to breaking news coverage, he did research on political violence in Peru, funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation's Program on Peace and International Cooperation. He contributed two essays to The Shining Path of Peru (New York: St. Martin's Press, 1992), edited by David Scott Palmer.
