John Schreiber

John Schreiber is an American teacher, theater director, and writer. Originally from Saint Paul, Minnesota, he taught English in southern Minnesota for forty-five years and directed over 140 plays throughout the area. He also pioneered teaching over interactive television and developed one of the first concurrent enrollment courses with a local college. He received numerous awards including Ashland Oil's "Golden Apple Award," and the "Selection of Excellence" from the MN Alliance for the Arts. In 2003, he was a finalist for Minnesota's Teacher of the Year, and in 2012 he was Minnesota's Theater Educator of the Year.

His Ironwood County novels, ("Hillcrest Journal," "Passing Through Paradise," "Life on the Fly," and "Catching the Stream") draw on many of his teaching experiences in rural Minnesota.

His collection of short stories, "Tales from 2 A.M." features stories written over the course of many years. Each story is written in a style designed to match the theme. Influences for these stories can be found in sources as diverse as Ray Bradbury and Mark Twain.

His fifth novel published was the epic fantasy "Heartstone." Schreiber adopted a cinematic, real-time style that brings an extra immediacy to the action. Though this was his fifth book published, it was actually his first novel written in 1984.

After promising himself never to write a novel as complicated as "Heartstone" again, he broke that promise and wrote the sequel "Heartstone: Under the Shadow." He also adapted three short stories found in "Tales from 2 a.m." into a novella called "Galactic Pariah: the Legend of Methuselah Brown." Unlike his other books, this is available only as an ebook on Amazon.

He also released a slightly updated "Me and Josh and Gideon" as a "single" ebook as well as the previously unpublished "New Jerusalem Poems" that includes "I AM: the Jesus Incident." Purchase of this ebook also gives the purchasing agent the right to produce the play and/or the dramatic monologue poems.

In 2016 he began publishing the Irregulars Project, a series of stories featuring a group of misfit super-powered adolescents. The series is a suspenseful homage to and metafictional deconstruction of Silver Age comics. In 2024 all the Highly Irregular stories were updated and re-released in two volumes.

In 2025 he released the first novel in a dystopian trilogy called "Wilderness Road." The second volume will be coming out in fall of 2026.
