This year marks the 50th anniversary of my entering the (then) nascent) field of water chemistry. I started in the Water Chemistry graduate program at the University of Wisconsin in June 1963. In fall of 1966, I started my faculty career in the Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences at the University of Florida, where I rose through the ranks. I stayed there until 1981, when I moved to the University of Minnesota. I have been a part of the environmental engineering group in the Department of Civil Engineering since that time, but I became Professor Emeritus in 2010. I greatly enjoyed working with my coauthor, Bill Arnold, on this water chemistry textbook and also enjoyed being able to rely on my many years of teaching and doing research on water chemistry in preparing the book.
