Motivated by my experiences as a student nurse, I developed an early interest in patient's legal needs. I joined the International Association of Forensic Nurses shortly after it's inception and have worked in a number of capacities with that organization. When I had a chance to work for the Medical Examiner's Office in New Mexico, I jumped at the opportunity. I was among the first group of sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE's) in Santa Fe where I was fortunate enough to do what one of my colleagues called "pure nursing". It is incredibly rewarding to be able to make a difference in people's lives, be it a victim or their surviving friends and family. As my friends will tell you, I'm quite a "cheerleader" for forensics in healthcare. I truly hope this book will give the reader the tools they need to recognize abuse and treat all patients' forensic needs with competence and confidence.
I am presently co-authoring another forensic book -- a pocket-sized book with F. A. Davis that should be out later on this year.
I've lived most of my life in Northern New Mexico and Southeast Alaska. I was fortunate enough to be able to buy 10 acres of an old homestead and build myself a little cabin --my sanctuary. My friends and neighbors are the kindest, most thoughtful and best all-around great people anyone could ask for. They make my life extraordinary in all the meaningful ways. And the wildlife always keeps me entertained!
