When I was 15 years old, I applied for an after school job at Nate’s Loan Office. I pictured it to be a business office with men in white shirts and ties sitting at desks writing up loans for people who needed money. The red sign with 3 brass balls outside the store told me this was not anything as I imagined. It was the start of a 7 year experience that changed the way I looked at life and business. I learned things at Nate’s that they don’t teach at Harvard Business School. I learned things at Nate's they would be afraid to teach at Harvard.

But the lessons and the memories stayed with me through my career and guided me in all of my decisions. I’ve had a career in communications - TV, advertising, marketing and presentation skill training. How we communicate, how we “package” the information for others to digest, is the essence of powerful connections. Everything I know about this I learned in the pawnshop.

These are stories from the pawnshop and lessons that I learned along the way.
