Born in Latvia, Baiba is the daughter of a rising young lawyer and a beautiful brunette mother. The war was already raging in Europe and the inevitable invasion of Latvia was at hand. That is when the world fell apart for the young family. Baiba's father became ill and died within a month. My mother left alone with two toddlers, soon took a new husband and with his help, the new family left Latvia on a small wooden German ship and escaped to Frankfurt.
The family managed to evade the bombs and guns and after six years as refugees, the family got their visas to enter the promise land - America!
They started life over in a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania. Penniless but hard working, they built up life all over again. Baiba's new father was a horticulturist and practically single-handed built five greenhouses while working at the local foundry. His life belonged to his plants and his wife.
Years later Baiba returned to the still Communist controlled Latvia, for the first time and saw just how terribly her extended family and all Latvians had suffered. She persevered through many trials and tribulations through determination earned her degrees in education and taught school for 32 years.
