An avid birder and lister since 1995, I've also surveyed species in various habitats for the RSPB, BTO, etc. Another gig was as Guide in the Hide for WWT Caerlaverock. Apart from mainland Britain, years in California and Connecticut have given me a pretty decent US list.

A defunct birding blog spawned a few books, one chronicling a 2008/9 road trip through Australasia. I'm now journaling my time in California. I'm writing novels too, finished ones being speculative fiction about bird flu (detect a theme?) and a sort of coming-of-age set in the 1960s and 70s. Also in progress are some speculative fiction and a volume of short stories.

My writing includes contributions to a few short films, for which I've even been crew and actor!

Thanks to the stories, a bit of a futurologist too; I reckon that resilience, simplicity and independence will be better for the planet than any amount of technology or “progress”. They'll even work for humans.
