David Tollen writes both novels and books on technology law. He is a lawyer, experienced speaker, expert witness, professional trainer, and instructor at U.C. Berkeley Law School. David’s work in all these roles calls on him to turn complex ideas into simple, clear, and often fun stories, how-to guides, and presentations.
David’s two award-winning novels are The Jericho River and Secrets of Hominea. They use fantasy to teach history to young people. He’s now working on a third novel, this time for the general fantasy market. In nearly all his fiction, David draws on the past to build colorful worlds.
David is also the author of The Tech Contracts Handbook, which since 2010 has consistently ranked as the #1 bestseller on Amazon from the American Bar Association (and as one of the ABA's top three to five sellers overall). It is widely used and relied upon in the U.S. and in multiple countries around the world and has been translated into Mandarin. The Handbook arises out of David's work as an attorney, trainer, and expert witness, specializing in agreements about information technology. He is the founder of Sycamore Legal, P.C., a San Francisco Bay Area boutique law firm, and of Tech Contracts Academy, LLC. Through the latter, he teaches businesspeople and lawyers to draft and negotiate IT contracts.
David earned a B.A. in history from U.C. Berkeley and has law degrees from Harvard Law School and Cambridge University. He is a member of the Board of Advisors for World History Encyclopedia, the Internet's largest history resource. And he writes the blog Pints of History. David lives in Northern California with his wife and two sons.
