William T. Hoston

WILLIAM T. HOSTON, Ph.D., is an award-winning scholar and author who hails from New Orleans, Louisiana. He is a tenured full professor of political science at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU).

He holds research interests in the areas of minority voting behavior, political behavior of Black politicians, race and minority group behavior, Black masculinity, sexualities and gender, race and crime, and theories and dynamics of racism and oppression.

Dr. Hoston's work traverses multiple genres, including editorials, essays, fiction, and poetry. He is the author or editor of 20-plus books, most recently: From “The Hill” to "The Hall": An Anthology on Prairie View Sports (2026); The Fight for Black Liberation (2025); The Crucial Conversation: Educating Through an Anti-Racist Lens (2022); Contemporary Debates in Social Justice (2021); Power to the People: The Time is Now, Vol. III (2020); and New Perspectives on Race and Ethnicity: Critical Readings about the Black Experience in Trump's America (2nd Edition; 2019). His academic book, Toxic Silence, won the 2019 Lambda Literary Award in the 'LGBTQ Studies' category.

He is currently working on four academic books related to the history of Prairie View A&M University: (1) Justice on 'The Hill': A History of Activism at Prairie View A & M University (Forthcoming, 2026, Eds.); (2) ‘The Hill’ We Climbed: Prairie View A&M University (Forthcoming, 2026, Eds.); (3) Black Profiles in Greatness: A Legacy of Prairie View A&M University (Forthcoming, 2028, Ed.); and (4) Billy's Boys: The Golden Age of Prairie View Football (Forthcoming, 2028).

In 2021, he became a co-editor of the Afro-Texans series at Texas Tech University Press. This series explores how African Americans fit, challenged, and expanded historical narratives concerning the general interpretation of Texan identity.

Dr. Hoston's motto is, "I just want to be an example. Many have come before me, and hopefully, those that come after will be inspired by the example that I have set."
