Samuel N. Rosenberg

Samuel N. Rosenberg, professor emeritus of French and Italian at Indiana University is a medievalist, philologist, and literary translator. Until retirement, he taught mainly French language and literature of the Middle Ages and taught translation as well. He has published translations of Arthurian material as well as an original retelling of the Lancelot-Guenevere-Galehaut narrative—"Lancelot and the Lord of the Distant Isles" (with the late Patricia Terry)—and has had several collaborative editions of medieval poetry and music published in both France and the United States. His English translation of critical writings by the composer Hector Berlioz and of lyric poetry by Charles d'Orléans appeared in the last few years. With Gaël Saint-Cricq and Eglal Doss-Quinby he prepared "Motets from the Chansonnier de Noailles," which appeared at the end of 2017; with the same collaborators he is currently at work on a critical edition of the medieval trouvère Robert de Reims. His newly published "Robert the Devil," a verse translation of the anonymous 13th-century romance "Robert le Diable," is to be followed by an anthology of his versions of poems by Paul Verlaine. He is also working on a translation of the 13th-century historical tale attributed to an anoymous French minstrel.
