David R. Meyer has been leading and coaching people his entire life. While still in High School Dave began coaching Little League Baseball in Dover, Ohio. Knowing that 9 and 10 year olds needed discipline, he applied a strict, tactical approach to the game. He quickly discovered that while discipline sounded good, the game wasn't fun for him or his players. And they didn't win. He changed his approach to encourage and engage his players and their parents. Suddenly the game was fun, the players enjoyed both practices and games, and the teams began to win... a lot.
After graduating from college Dave was immediately thrust into a management role with employees that were, in some cases 2 or even 3 times his age. But how do you lead people who are that much more senior than you? That was the question that Dave needed to answer. Over the next 20 years he began to develop and formalize his management philosophy that involved identifying what people did best, encouraging people to stretch themselves, and then using those talents to better the organization. Much as with his Little League team Dave discovered that the more people enjoyed what they were doing, the more success they had.
Hence the development of the philosophy of The Engaged Manager.
Over the years Dave worked in both Retail Management (I/T and Accounting) and in high tech. He found his passion in developing people and opened his coaching and development business in 2003. In 2008 he and business partner Laurie Valaer opened up ECI Learning Systems LLC to provide a foundation to create engaged leaders all over the world. Their philosphy involves the intersection of a company's culture with the leadership styles within the organization, and the employees expectations to create not just engaged managers, but engaged organizations.
