Michelle Kenway is an Australian pelvic floor and women's exercise physiotherapist and the founder of the popular pelvic floor information site http://www.pelvicexercises.com.au. Her special interest is exercise for women with pelvic floor dysfunction, specifically pelvic prolapse and after pelvic surgery. Michelle has a strong sporting background. She was heavily involved in athletics and team sports during her childhood and teen years. Michelle conducted her own private practice for many years before returning to post graduate studies and completing qualifications in both Exercise for Women (University of Melbourne) and Continence and Women's Health (Curtin University). Whilst studying Michelle was invited to the role of consulting physiotherapist at The Mater Private Hospital Redlands in the women's health unit, treating women undergoing gynaecological surgery and childbirth. During this time her passion for therapeutic exercise blossomed and she initiated exercise classes for women for pelvic floor problems, osteoporosis, spinal health in addition to before and after childbirth. Her book Inside Out arose from her unique understanding of women's exercise combined with current research clearly showing that many popular exercises impact upon the female pelvic floor and that many women, fitness instructors and health professionals remain unaware of this. Many of Michelle's patients were returning unknowingly to these exercises after gynaecological surgery thereby risking further pelvic floor injury. She realised the physical and emotional impact and frustration of many of these women being unable to exercise for fear of pelvic floor injury and that they could be empowered by understanding how to exercise for fitness safely and effectively. Michelle regularly presents to Australian medical and allied health professionals on pelvic floor health and pelvic floor safe exercise for women.
