Yatin Patel

Yatin J. Patel, MD, is a board-certified pulmonary and sleep physician, author, speaker, and creator of the AEI∞ Framework.

“I’m a sleep physician who doesn’t care about sleep. What I care about is energy, intimacy, and life.”

That sentence sums up 30 years of practice. Dr. Patel is not interested in what his patients do at night. He is interested in their daytime: how alert they are, how present they are, and how much spark they still possess. Sleep is simply where the day gets made.

He built a career proving it. In 1994, in Goshen, Indiana, he founded the Sneeze & Snooze Clinic and ran a single sleep study after hours in a borrowed stress-test room. That study grew into an accredited four-bed sleep center at Goshen Hospital and a program that served thousands of patients across northern Indiana’s Amish and Mennonite country: factory workers and farmers, truck drivers and teachers, skeptics and believers, all of them discovering how much of their waking lives depended on what happened while they slept.

His standard was higher than the one the healthcare system uses. Medicare counts a CPAP patient as compliant at four hours a night on 70% of nights. Dr. Patel pushed his patients toward seven hours every night, because four hours is a billing threshold and seven is a life. He calls the difference real restoration instead of checkbox medicine.

Dr. Patel’s AEI∞ Framework describes how rectangular alertness, his term for wakefulness that holds steady from morning to night, enhances emotional intelligence and expands information intelligence, opening capacity for selfless service and spirituality. Together, they form an upward spiral he calls the supreme life.

He is the author of three books. His latest, CPAP Is Sexy: How Treating Sleep Apnea Restores Energy, Intimacy, and Life, draws on tens of thousands of patient encounters and combines patient stories, medical research, and practical guidance for getting diagnosed and getting treated. It follows Sleep Well, Lead Well and Deeper Sleep, Richer Life.

His work has extended well past the exam room. After a truck driver fell asleep at the wheel and killed a young police officer on a northern Indiana highway, Dr. Patel founded Stay Awake, Drive Safe in 2000. By 2002, the campaign was issuing drowsy-driving warnings ahead of every major travel holiday and meeting drivers directly at highway rest areas. It has since brought that education to schools, colleges, and employers across the region. At Goshen Hospital, he founded and chaired the Zero Medication Error Committee, whose work measurably reduced medication errors and received the 2006 MACademy Award for Best Patient Safety Initiative. He served as chair of the hospital’s Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee for 20 years. He now volunteers as a physician with Remote Area Medical, caring for unhoused and uninsured patients.

Dr. Patel earned his medical degree from Baroda Medical College at Maharaja Sayajirao University in Vadodara, India. After immigrating to the United States, he completed his internal medicine residency at Englewood Hospital, a Mount Sinai Medical Center program, where he served as chief resident, followed by a pulmonary and sleep medicine fellowship at Marshall University. In 2008, he graduated magna cum laude from the Executive MBA program at the University of Notre Dame.

His recognition includes the Physician Choice Award and the Best Communicator Award from Goshen Hospital, the Pfizer Good Physician Award from the Englewood Hospital Association, a 25-year service award from Goshen Health System, and an outstanding achievement award from the Sardar Patel University Alumni Association.

The son of a Gujarati novelist, he was born in Bakrol, a village in Gujarat, India. He grew up watching his father write and rewrite manuscripts by hand at a time when few people around could read them. Years later, Dr. Patel added author to his own list of occupations, and he still reads his manuscripts aloud as vocal practice, a habit his family finds considerably less charming than he does.

Dr. Patel lives in Potomac, Maryland, with his wife, Dipti. When he is not writing, speaking, or volunteering, he enjoys vegetarian cooking, meditation, spiritual study—particularly of the Bhagavad Gita—and time in nature. He also serves as an on-call babysitter for his two grandchildren in Washington, DC, who have taught him that well-rested children demand significantly more sweets.

Across his books, his speaking, and his work in sleep education, he returns to one message: Sleep. Serve. Love. Laugh.
