I think I’ve always enjoyed telling stories; some true, some otherwise. I thought I’d be telling stories all my life but somewhere around the end of my teens the habit faded into the background and only emerged occasionally, usually when I was supposed to be writing sober stuff like user manuals or technical documentation.

Then one June, not long after reading Philip Pullman’s The Amber Spyglass and faced with a quiet day in the office, I wrote a short story – in that most easily mocked of genres, fan fiction - and posted it on the internet. The response – and my personal feelings about writing that story – were so good that I kept on and on, winning a number of awards along the way.

But as I carried on writing fic something became clear to me, and that was that although I was borrowing characters and situations from a published source, what interested me most were my own characters and their own stories and so I came to realise that I ought to set their adventures in a world that belonged solely to me. And so here I am – a writer of original fiction that I hope you will enjoy reading.

I was born in Bristol in 1953. I now live with my wife and family in southeast England, where I work as a consultant electronic engineer.

I kill plants – not on purpose, it just happens. Some people are naturally brown-fingered.
