Koritha Mitchell

Koritha Mitchell grew up in Texas, with its history of intense racial violence & its legacy of people of color who persevered despite it. She attended college in Ohio, known for its commitment to freedom while slavery was the law of the land. Partly because she encountered racism (even) there, she was inspired to pursue graduate education to learn more. Studying near Washington, D.C., she quickly realized that the nation's capital is below the Mason-Dixon line, which helped her understand the work of Black artists in & near the capital city, who (like Mitchell would later) experienced its problems but had faith in its promises.
