Roberto Martinez

Brother Roberto Martínez Rivera is a priest of the Capuchin Order of Franciscan Friars in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He has a bachelor’s degree in communications from Texas University at San Marcos (1985), a master’s in divinity from the Graduate School of Theology of the Dominican in the Caribbean (1995), and a licentiate and doctorate in biblical theology with a specialization in New Testament from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC (2010). Roberto has worked most of his life as formator of candidates to the Order of Capuchin Friars, a preacher in different parts of the United States and Latin America, and a professor of Sacred Scripture. He served as the religious superior of the Capuchin Friars in Puerto Rico from 2014 to 2017. Roberto has been an invited lecturer at the Washington Theological Union, the Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico, Bethany Theological Seminary, Graduate School of Theology of the Dominicans in the Caribbean, Boston College, and the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, where he is currently the Chair of Theology and Philosophy Department. He has offered courses in New Testament, Greek, and Hebrew and his areas of research include the historical Jesus, the synoptic gospels, and early Christianity. Roberto belongs to numerous academic organizations including the Society of Biblical Literature, the Catholic Biblical Association, the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the United States, and Catholic Theological Society of America. He is also an adviser to the Conference of Latin-American Bishops (CELAM).
