Gary Herron grew up in the suburbs of Detroit and fell in love with the Detroit Tigers -- especially Al Kaline -- as a youngster. He moved to New Mexico in 1975 and became a fan of the Albuquerque Dukes, eventually transferring his passion for the game into a gig as an Official Corer for the Pacific Coast League. Herron "scored" his first Dukes ballgame in 1983 and when the team ended its existence after the 2000 season, he had scored more than 1,000 PCL games played in Albuquerque. He became an official scorer for the then-new Albuquerque Isotopes in 2003 and, by the time the 2022 season ends, he will have scored 640 or so games for them.
He is a longtime baseball hobbyist and card collector, and decided in 2010 that baseball's history in Albuquerque deserved to have a voice. He "pitched" his idea to Arcadia Publishing, resulting in "Baseball in Albuquerque" coming out in 2011. To tell even more stories, he wrote the most-comprehensive book on the history of the pro game (plus high school and UNM) in Albuquerque -- "Duke City Diamonds: Baseball in Albuquerque," which was published in 2013.
