It's simple. Born Brooklyn, NY of Italian immigrant parents. Went to Catholic schools, then public high school. Thanks to working, scholarships and loans, got degrees from Columbia and New York Universities. Wrote staff and freelance for newspapers and magazines, finally did the book. Mostly love my family, great music, basking in New York and San Francisco, my two home towns.

IN PROGRESS: Nobody Travels South of Rome: Finding Calabria.
Spartacus and Pythagoras were ancient visitors to the south of Italy. Modern travelers started streaming into this remote region in the 18th century, when the Grand Tour took a detour from the north. In 1915, Norman Douglas wrote his marvelous book Old Calabria, which is still in print. I will pick up some of his trail in today's Calabria. What has changed? What hasn't?
Slated for a 2015 publication.
