Timothy Stephen Sedore

Timothy Sedore is Professor of English at The City University of New York, Bronx Community College. He regularly teaches undergraduate courses in composition, literature and religious rhetoric and has taught graduate-level courses in pedagogy and composition studies.

His book, An Illustrated Guide to Virginia’s Confederate Monuments was published by the Southern Illinois University Press (http://www.siupress.com). He has been the recipient of several CUNY Research Foundation grants for his work in this area, and his academic sabbatical for 2011-2012 is devoted to a book-length study of Tennessee Civil War monuments.

He completed his undergraduate work at New York University with a double major in economics and English. At NYU he studied Austrian economics under Israel Kirzner; he studied English, including American studies under Kenneth Silverman. His Master of Arts degree in English, with a focus on American studies, is from Arizona State University. His doctorate, in English education, is from Columbia University, Teachers College. Chapters from his dissertation on Mexican American literature—an American studies perspective on the work of such writers as Rudolfo Anaya and Richard Rodriguez--have been published in several journal articles and served as subjects for conference presentations.

Sedore’s interest in Virginia Civil War monuments and their place on the American landscape has led to numerous publications and conference papers.

In addition to presenting his research at Civil War Roundtable gatherings and the Banner Lecture at the Virginia Historical Society, he has given papers at conventions of the American Studies Association (ASA); the Modern Language Association (MLA); the Annual Faulkner & Yoknapatawpha Conference; the Penn State Conference on Rhetoric & Composition; the Convention of College Composition and Communication (CCCC); the Mid-Atlantic College Conference; the Community College Humanities Association (CCHA); the American Culture Association (ACA), and in faculty development workshops and graduate seminars at The City University of New York and Virginia Tech.
