Dustin Gish

Dr. Dustin Gish is Professor of Honors and Political Philosophy in The Honors College at the University of Houston, where he teaches courses in the Great Books core program ("The Human Situation") and advanced seminars in classical and early modern political theory. He is co-author of "Thomas Jefferson and the Science of Republican Government: A Political Biography of 'Notes on the State of Virginia'" (Cambridge University Press, 2017), co-editor of "Rival Visions: How Jefferson and His Contemporaries Defined the Early American Republic" (UVA Jeffersonian America Series, 2021), and most recently, "Xenophon's Socratic Rhetoric: Virtue, Eros, and Philosophy in the 'Symposium'" (Lexington Books, 2023) His current book projects include "Brill's Companion to the Reception of Xenophon" (forthcoming) and a study of Thomas Jefferson's diplomatic career in Paris.

Other published works include journal articles, book chapters, review essays, and book reviews on a wide range of topics in the history of political philosophy, including ancient political thought (Homer, Xenophon, Plato), the plays of William Shakespeare, the political thought of Thomas Jefferson and the American Founding, Politics & Literature (Euripides, Jane Austen), and visual rhetoric (Julius II's Rome, Lorenzetti's Siena). He is also the contributing co-editor to five volumes: "The Quest for Excellence in the Liberal Arts and Sciences" (2016); "'Resistance to Tyrants, Obedience to God': Reason, Religion, and Republicanism at the American Founding" (2015); "Shakespeare and the Body Politic" (2013); "Souls With Longing: Representations of Honor and Love in Shakespeare" (2011); and "The Political Thought of Xenophon" (2009).

Dr. Gish has previously taught courses on American Political Thought in the Institute for the American Constitutional Heritage at the University of Oklahoma, and in the Center for American Studies at Christopher Newport University; courses on Political Philosophy at the College of the Holy Cross; and courses on Classical Political Philosophy and the Humanities at the American University of Rome and John Cabot University in Rome, Italy.
