Darby Nelson

Darby Nelson, born and raised in Minnesota, is a freelance writer and conservation activist. He received his Ph.D. in aquatic ecology at the University of Minnesota and taught college biology and environmental science for 35 years. He did contract writing of ancillaries and selected text material in environmental science books for McGraw-Hill Publishers for six years. He has written numerous magazine articles on environmental and ecological topics. He has received many awards including the Minnesota Post-Secondary Science teacher of the year from the Minnesota Academy of Science/Minnesota Science Teachers Association; Faculty Excellence Award; Golden Chalk Award from students; as well as awards from the Sierra Club; the Environmental Award from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency; Izaak Walton League's Sigurd F. Olson Conservation Award among others. He has served on numerous boards including the Nature Conservancy and is past board president of Conservation Minnesota. Darby is an avid cross-country ski racer, wilderness canoe traveler and gardener. For Love of Lakes is his first book.
