John P. Klingman

John P. Klingman holds the Richard Koch Chair in Architecture at Tulane University where he has been a faculty member since 1983. He has long been interested in issues of infrastructure in relation to architecture. His upper level design studios have ranged from sustainable design of individual buildings to urban design proposals within New Orleans. His longstanding interest in sustainable design culminated in Chairing the Tulane School of Architecture Sustainable Design Conference in 2010.

In 2001 he received the President’s Award for Outstanding Teaching, Tulane’s highest teaching honor; he has received the Tulane School of Architecture Outstanding Teaching Award six times.

As an architect, he has been engaged in consulting on projects in the city and on Tulane’s Uptown Campus. He chairs the Architectural Review Committee of the New Orleans Historic Districts Landmarks Commission. He also is the sole regular architecture critic in the city, writing an annual “Best of New New Orleans Architecture” article since 1997 for New Orleans Magazine.

A founding member od DOCOMOMO/NO, he has been active in seeking to preserve outstanding buildings from the mid twentieth century in New Orleans. His wood sculptures have been featured at Pecha Kucha events in New Orleans, 2009 and Tokyo, 2010. His furniture design has been exhibited in the New Orleans AIA Furniture by Architects Series, 2009-10.
