Dr. Purdum received his BS in Economics from Muskingum University (1965) , and his MA and Ph.D. in Economics from The Ohio State University (1972). He taught economics in the College of Business Administration at Creighton and Butler Universities. He then switched his teaching emphasis to the computer field and finished his teaching career in the College of Computer Technology at Purdue University where he taught a variety of computer programming languages.
Dr. Purdum has published 20 books starting with his first programming textbook in 1982. His most recent textbook covers digital signal processing and software defined radios. Dr. Purdum has been a licensed amateur radio operator since 1953. He has received numerous teaching and scholarly award, including: The Founders Award, (4 States QRP Group), 2023, for “{significant achievement in QRP radio communications, The Bennett Prize (Radio Society of Great Britain), 2020, “to recognize a significant contribution or innovation which furthers the art of radio communication”, winner of four ARRL Cover Plaque Awards (March, 2016, November, 2017, November, 2018, and February, 2025) awarded by the readers for his articles in QST, the Butler University Teacher-Scholar Award (1983), was a National Science Foundation Fellow (Microcomputers in Education, 1976), was a Finalist for the Creighton University Outstanding Teacher Award (1973, 1974), and was a National Science Foundation Fellow (1969).
