Andrew Derr is Vanderbilt University’s 1992 recipient of the Fred Russell-Grantland Rice TRA Sportswriting Scholarship. A part-time freelance journalist since graduating in 1996, he lives in Maryland with his wife, Molly, and four children, Michael, Hannah, Isabella, and Lukas. His full-time career is with Deloitte Consulting, where he has been since 2004.
In the early 1990s, Derr began writing on a regular basis for his hometown newspaper in Middletown, MD. His writings caught the eye of Russell, who still chaired the selection committee of the Fred Russell-Grantland Rice, full-tuition sportswriting scholarship to Vanderbilt. Derr wrote for "The Vanderbilt Hustler" for four years, serving as Sports Editor and Managing Editor before graduating. As he started a career in business consulting, as well as a family, Derr began freelancing for Vanderbilt's athletic department, writing monthly feature stories until moving to Maryland in August 2004.
Since 2005, Derr's labor of love has been completing the first biography of Fred Russell, legendary southern sportswriter from Nashville, TN.
