Do you ever feel as if too many people think the same? I do. Everyone does not literally share the same thoughts, of course, but there undoubtedly exists an overbearing social pressure for conformity. This relentless push moves like the tide of a swift-moving and powerful river, sweeping people away. Gradually, over time, this river changes direction, as rivers do, cutting new riverbanks, but the main thrust of the river largely remains singular.
I resent being pushed in the direction expected of me, though staying on the main route is safer than exploring desolate tributaries. Am I countercultural? Not exactly, as there seems to be too much uniformity and inflexibility among their ranks, too. I do not merely paddle upriver. I want to sail my own passage.
My books reflect this philosophy of mine. Whether I am writing a fantastic dystopian or a realistic crime novel, I strive to offer an uncommon perspective. I do not want to rehash for you, the reader, exactly what you have already read a million times before. Stereotypes are superficial and boring. The currents and winds I follow take me (and, hopefully, you) to more interesting places.
