Freda Lucy was raised by three sets of foster parents, all family related, after the death of her parents at an early age. Her education includes an associate degree in Mental Health Technology, with extra courses in mental retardation. She has both worked with and volunteered with children and adults with special needs for more than 35 years.
Having a child with down syndrome led Mrs. Lucy to begin a journal and later incorporate that journal into this book.
For Such a Time as This was selected for the title because she believes that Karen indeed was born to her and her husband in order for her to tell others that individuals with special needs are people first, and also to let them know many battles have already been fought.
