Harold D. Thomas has been interested in politics as long as he can remember. In high school, he actively supported the Goldwater campaign. As a student at Ohio Northern University, he was active in the College Republicans during the Vietnam War protests. However, he was never afraid to take an unorthodox position. As a graduate student at Georgetown University (Washington, D.C.), he became so disgusted with the Nixon Administration in the wake of Watergate that he became one of a tiny minority of Republicans to vote for George McGovern.
Harold is a native of Canton, Ohio, where he returned after completing his education. He was executive director of the Stark County Republican Party and twice ran unsuccessfully for public office. He also served as finance director for a statewide judicial campaign. While in Canton, he co-founded a civic organization in Canton that sponsored debates between speakers with opposing views.
After moving to Columbus 25 years ago, he began to wonder why the political system was not working the way it was designed. This question began an inquiry into the philosophy behind the Constitution, particularly as it relates to states’ rights, nullification, and secession, on which is recognized as an expert.
He has maintained his blog, The Ohio Republic, since 2007, is a regular columnist for The Liberty Voice, an Ohio-based libertarian newspaper; and has presented to rallies and group meetings throughout the state.
