John Luthy

John Luthy is a nationally known private and public sector futurist who has enjoyed a distinguished thirty-five year career serving in both government and industry. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biology, a master’s degree in public health, a master’s degree in public administration/ political science, and a doctorate in education emphasizing organizational leadership. During his years in government, he served in local and state government in director or senior management positions in general administration, health, and human services. He has also owned nine businesses since 1977.

Over the three decades he has consulted to private business, voluntary, and public agencies, John Luthy has assisted hundreds of organizations, including Fortune 500 corporations, closely held businesses, non-profit organizations and city, county and state government toward the goal of becoming more productive, cohesive, and accountable. He is the author of the acclaimed Prepared for Challenge Organization Development Series, which has guided hundreds of organizations to higher levels of efficiency and performance. His feature articles, Leaving a Leadership Legacy and Seven Dimensions of Employee Improvement and Development for Public Management Magazine, and both The Strategic Planning Guide and Operations Planning for Improved Performance for the International City/ County Management Association have received national and international attention. His recent book Planning the Future has received strong national attention due to its focus on helping community leaders plan for difficult challenges ahead. John has provided unique planning work for many communities and public agencies and his innovative scenario planning processes are being used throughout the U.S. Dr. Luthy is the creator of the Public Futures Blog, which helps state and local government prepare for a challenging future, is an active member of the World Future Society and has been recognized in ‘Who’s Who in America’ and ‘Who’s Who in American Education.’ He serves as faculty for the Northwest Community Development Institute and is one of this country’s most sought after keynote speakers and consultants in the areas of public sector strategic thinking, scenario planning, and preparing public agencies, employees and communities for a challenging future.

As president of The Futures Corporation, Dr. Luthy has also been able to fulfill his goal of creating an executive management institute to strengthen community leadership and encourage the development of exceptional public leaders. The Executive Management Development Institute has been operating since 1992 as a formally established division of The Futures Corporation. It is dedicated to assisting public officials and managers obtain the organization development, forecasting, strategic planning, and program evaluation skills considered essential to address a challenging future that will require entirely new levels of organizational, social, economic, and community-wide performance.
