I have always had an interest in history.
I have studied the largest battle in history, Stalingrad. I have been to that city (now Volgograd) ten times. I have participated in Victory Day for the 60th and 70th anniversaries of the end of Nazi Germany.
I am sometimes haunted by the largest one day death toll in history, the battle of Cannae in 216 BC, where Hannibal defeated the Roman army, and at least 50,000 Roman soldiers died. That's right, in one day.
You can see articles about these battles at my website www.LeeSaylor.com.
You can also see why I think that Benedict Arnold was an American hero, (read the entire article).
Also, did you know that Captain Bligh was actually a good guy? It's true; Hollywood has always gotten it wrong. Here's some trivia. Mel Gibson's film, 'The Bounty', though flawed, is the best and most historically accurate of all the Mutiny on the Bounty films.
I have mentioned the largest battle in history and the largest 'one day death toll in a battle'. The largest blood bath in American history happened in 1862, at Antietam Maryland. This Civil War battle resulted in 23,000 men killed, wounded or missing. This pivotal battle, in which neither side actually won, has been called 'the bloodiest day of combat in American history'.
The battle of Gettysburg, over three days, had casualties of 50,000.
The history of war is filled with horrifying battles. World War I was an age of trench warfare and mass attacks against machine guns. During the battle of Verdun, French and German soldiers faced each other for ten months, resulting in over 900,000 casualties.
