Stephen May

STEPHEN MAY is Professor in the School of Education and Social Practice, University of Auckland / Waipapa Taumata Rau, New Zealand. He has published 27 books and over 130 articles and chapters in the areas of language diversity, language rights, and the wider politics of ethnicity, bilingualism and multiculturalism. His recent books include Mobilizing multilingual identities (Routledge, 2026, with Gary Barkhuizen and Mi Yung Park) and Critical ethnography, language, race/ism and education (Routledge, 2023, with Blanca Caldas). He is also the author of the award-winning Language and Minority Rights, (Routledge, 2012; 2nd ed.) and The Multilingual Turn (Routledge, 2014). Stephen is a Founding Editor of the interdisciplinary journal, Ethnicities (Sage). He is also the Editor in Chief of the 3rd edition of the benchmark 10-volume Encyclopedia of Language and Education (Springer, 2017).
