I am African-American and was born and bred in Baltimore, Maryland. I was working as a paralegal at McDermott, Will & Emery in Washington, D.C. until I moved to Holland in 2001 after marrying my husband, who is Dutch. I exchanged the briefcase and travelling (I worked for the OSHA group at McDermott and assisted on inspections) for a backpack and went to school full-time to learn the Dutch language for nine months. Besides working at McDermott, I have also worked at The American Civil Liberties Union in Baltimore, MD and The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in The Hague. I can understand the lead character in my book. I have taken two huge risks in my life – moving to Holland and leaving my family and friends behind and also leaving the Tribunal to follow my dream of becoming an author.
